World Coconut Day (02/09/2025)

 Celebrating World Coconut Day

Today, the Chemistry Department specially observed World Coconut Day.

Maria Jenifer J of II B.Sc Chemistry delivered an insightful talk on the chemistry of coconut, showing how science is embedded in everyday life.

Our students also discussed and reflected on an article by Mr. P. Thulasi Narayanan, State Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, published in "The Hindu-Tamil Thisai." This enriched the session by linking science with culture, economy, and society.

In his article, Mr. Thulasi Narayanan beautifully highlights:

The scientific side: antiviral properties of lauric acid & monolaurin in coconut oil.

The cultural and historical depth, from ancient Indian texts to Marco Polo’s travel accounts.

The economic role, India’s global leadership in production, coir exports, and farmer livelihoods.

The current challenges are climate change, pests, fair pricing, and the need for stronger government support.

Coconut truly lives up to its name, “Kalpavriksha”, the tree of life, enriching health, culture, economy, and sustainability all at once.

A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Thulasi Narayanan for voicing the immense value of this tree and the concerns of our farmers.
